The 6.7L Power Stroke by the numbers
Ford's 2026 Super Duty owner's manual lists the 6.7L as a 406-cubic-inch V8 diesel that requires ultra-low sulfur diesel, with biodiesel blends up to B20 allowed. It takes 15.0 quarts of oil including the filter. Ford's first choice is its own Motorcraft SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil; another brand works if it has the correct viscosity and meets Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 spec.
Among the alternates the manual lists are Motorcraft SAE 5W-40 full synthetic for severe duty service or for fuel with more than 5% biodiesel, and SAE 0W-40 for places that reach 22 degrees below zero.
Own an older Power Stroke? Each generation has its own intervals and oil specs, so go by the manual for your model year, which Ford posts on its owner manuals page.
Ford's maintenance schedule for a diesel Super Duty
These are the items in Ford's 2026 Super Duty schedule that set a Power Stroke apart from a gas truck.
| Item | Normal schedule | Severe service, or when the truck asks |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | At the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor's message, done inside two weeks or 500 miles | Monitor reset by mistake or not working: 12 months or 15,000 miles at most |
| Engine-mounted and frame-mounted fuel filters | Every 30,000 miles | Every 15,000 miles, or when a low fuel pressure message appears |
| Fuel and water separator | Check it monthly | Drain it when the warning light or message comes on, at about 6.76 fl oz (200 ml) of water |
| Diesel Exhaust Fluid | Refill at every oil change interval | Use only API-certified DEF, and refill right away if the truck limits your speed |
| Engine air filter | Every 30,000 miles; check the restriction gauge monthly | Dusty driving calls for more frequent inspection and replacement |
| Engine air inlet foam filter | Every 50,000 miles | Every 30,000 miles |
| Engine coolant | First change at 10 years or 200,000 miles, then every 5 years or 100,000 miles | Same schedule |
| Transmission fluid and filter | Every 150,000 miles | Ford says to consult the dealer for your requirements |

Does your truck run on Ford's severe schedule?
Ford's manual counts these as severe driving conditions: trips under 5 to 10 miles, temperatures well above or below average, any dusty driving, idling more than recommended, and hauling a heavy load or towing. Any one of them puts your truck on the severe-service items in the chart, including fuel filters every 15,000 miles instead of 30,000.
Around Moses Lake that list is easy to hit. Harvest season raises dust on farm roads across the Basin, summer heat and winter cold snaps both qualify, and a loaded trailer headed west on I-90 toward the Columbia River crossing at Vantage is towing by any measure. Ford adds that dusty use means inspecting and replacing the engine and cabin air filters more often, and diesel Super Duty trucks carry an air filter restriction gauge that Ford wants checked every month.
DEF, exhaust filter cleaning and dry grass
DEF is what the 6.7L's selective catalytic reduction system uses to turn nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. Ford's estimate is 2 to 6 percent of the fuel you burn, so a month with 100 gallons of diesel means 2 to 6 gallons of DEF, with payload, towing, driving style, altitude, humidity and temperature moving the number. Buy API-certified DEF only, and keep it out of the fuel tank. Low or contaminated DEF brings a 50 mph speed cap. An empty tank that isn't refilled leaves the engine at idle only after the next stop, and Ford says a minimum of 1 gallon is needed to clear that.
The diesel particulate filter cleans itself as you drive. Short hops and long idles keep it from finishing, so Ford's answer is a drive of 20 minutes or more now and then on the freeway or a main road, in a gear that keeps the engine between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. Once the filter reads full, the instrument cluster lets you start a manual cleaning at idle. Plan on roughly half an hour, outdoors, with the truck 10 to 15 feet from obstructions and from anything that could catch fire or melt.
That warning matters here in late summer. Ford says never to park or idle over dry grass or leaves, because regeneration pushes exhaust temperatures very high and the exhaust stays hot after the engine is off. Stop on gravel or pavement, not in a stubble field.
On cold mornings, if your truck has a block heater, Ford says it works best below 0 F and should run no more than three hours at a time. DEF can freeze below 12 F. The truck has a DEF heater, but an overfilled tank that freezes can be damaged, so don't top it past full in a cold snap.
Farm fuel stays in the farm tank
If your truck shares a yard with tractors and a tank of red-dyed diesel, keep the nozzles apart. Ford's manual says not to use agricultural fuel, home heating oil or any diesel not intended for highway use, notes that red dye marks fuel for agricultural and off-road use, and warns that the wrong fuel can damage the injection system, the engine, the exhaust catalyst and the particulate filter.
Ford's warranty guide also excludes damage caused by contaminated or improper fuel or fluids, so a tank of the wrong diesel can become an out-of-pocket repair.
Warranty on a newer Power Stroke
Ford's 2026 warranty guide carves out separate Diesel Engine Coverage for the direct-injection 6.7L, good for 5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever arrives first. Its parts list runs from the block, heads and internal parts to the turbocharger, injectors, glow plugs and high-pressure fuel injection pump. It leaves out fuel lines, the fuel tank and the frame-mounted fuel conditioning module, the filter and water separator under the truck. Powertrain coverage runs 5 years or 60,000 miles, and base coverage under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 3 years or 36,000 miles.
Ford makes scheduled maintenance the owner's job: skipping it can void coverage on the parts it affects, so keep every receipt with the truck. Warranty repairs are done at a Ford dealer, and we are one. Commercial customers with a Ford Fleet Identification Number may qualify for a 5-year / 100,000-mile powertrain extension on Super Duty trucks reported as fleet sales when new; the guide spells out who is eligible.
Ford Parts installed here come with Ford's 2-year, unlimited-mile limited warranty, which includes limited labor costs, and Clary Repair Protection adds a 2-year / unlimited-mile warranty on qualifying repairs. Clary Repair Protection does not cover regular maintenance or warranty work.
Before you book
A few details help the service advisor get your diesel in and out.
- Write down the messageNote the exact wording of any DEF, exhaust filter, low fuel pressure or water-in-fuel message, and whether a wrench or engine light is on.
- Know your fuel filter mileageLook up when both fuel filters were last changed. Ford's interval is 30,000 miles, or 15,000 under severe service.
- Say how the truck worksTowing, long idles at a job site, dusty field roads and biodiesel blends all change what Ford's schedule calls for.
- Check for recallsLook up open recalls on our Ford recalls page and mention any you find when you book.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I change the fuel filters on a 6.7 Power Stroke?
Swap both of them, the one on the engine and the one mounted under the truck, at 30,000 miles on Ford's normal 2026 schedule. Halve that to 15,000 if the truck tows, idles for long stretches or runs dusty roads, and don't wait if a low fuel pressure message shows up.
What oil does the 6.7L Power Stroke use?
The 2026 manual calls for 15.0 quarts, filter included, of Motorcraft SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil. A substitute has to be the right viscosity and meet Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 spec. Ford lists SAE 5W-40 full synthetic for severe duty or biodiesel above B5, and SAE 0W-40 for extreme cold.
How often does a Power Stroke need an oil change?
Let the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor decide. Once its message appears, Ford gives you two weeks or 500 miles. A monitor that resets by mistake or stops working doesn't stretch that: Ford's ceiling for a diesel is 12 months or 15,000 miles between changes.
What happens if my Super Duty runs out of DEF?
Expect a 50 mph cap first, while the fluid is low or contaminated. If the tank goes dry and stays that way, the engine will only idle after you stop. Pour in at least 1 gallon of API-certified DEF to get out of idle-only mode, then fill the tank to lift the speed cap.
How do I clean the diesel particulate filter on my Super Duty?
Mostly by driving it. A steady run of 20 minutes or more at freeway or main-road speed lets the filter burn off soot. When it reads full, you can start a manual cleaning at idle from the instrument cluster, parked outdoors and clear of anything that can burn. If the malfunction light is on and cleaning won't start, book service.
Can I run red-dyed farm diesel in my Power Stroke?
No. Ford's manual says not to use agricultural fuel or any diesel not intended for highway use, and Ford's warranty doesn't cover damage from improper fuel.
Do you have a shuttle?
Yes. Our courtesy shuttle is free for service customers. It takes you where you need to go when you drop off your truck and brings you back when the work is done.
